Objective: It is the policy of the School of Architecture and Construction Management to encourage, support and nurture research activities for graduate students. Our goal is to provide an environment where graduate students may have the opportunity to work in conjunction with faculty on scholarly and creative work that advances the body of knowledge in the professions. As stated in the School’s benchmarks of fall 2004 our goal is to have 10% of our graduate students obtain scholarly publication experience prior to graduation. As such research activities that include graduate students must lead to identifiable outcomes that promote research and scholarly achievement. Graduate assistants are not to be utilized in normal preparation activities for courses such as copying course materials, setting up lectures or grading.

The following policy outlines the procedures and methods for identifying graduate students and the specific faculty to which they will be assigned. Not all graduate students will be expected and or qualify for research assistants and faculty should be very selective in identifying students with whom they wish to work. Faculty will be serving as mentors to the graduate students helping them to understand research components and methods and as such will require great commitment from faculty. In order to select a graduate research assistant(s) the following criteria must be met by the sponsoring faculty member.

• A specific research project (funded or unfunded) must be clearly identified.

• Specific outcomes for the academic year must be identified. Examples include anticipated publications, conferences, journals, competitions etc. that the graduate student will receive credit and or acknowledgement. If attendance and co presentation at a conference is anticipated please identify conference and location.

• Submit anticipated budget for graduate student to attend conference (if applicable.)

• Specific learning outcomes and responsibilities for the graduate student(s) must be identified.

• Expected contribution research will provide to the professions.

• Time frame and schedule of activities.

Methodology for submission:

In April of each year the Director will request from the faculty proposals for graduate assistants for the following fall semester. The proposal should address all of the above criteria in addition to the following.

• Name of student(s) that will be involved on research. (Maximum of Two students per faculty member.)

• Describe the method of interaction with the students. (i.e. set times to meet each week.)

The research duration will be for one academic year. (fall and spring semester) For Master of Architecture Students credit for research assistants will be comprised of two credits of Arch 520 for each semester for a total of four credits. These four credits will be utilized for the elective requirement in the M Arch curriculum. For MS Arch students general elective credit will be given.
