The authors of this proposal, Tom J. Bartuska, Bashir A. Kazimee, and Michael S. Owen are professors of architecture at Washington State University. Individually and collectively, they have directed many of their professional interests in a holistic, ecological approach to architecture and urban design. The three colleagues are committed to apply their scholarship locally and globally. They have integrated their interests in architecture, housing, community development, and urban design/planning with the emerging and challenging concept of "sustainability" to create their collaborative proposal for Pullman. Based upon an international competition, the proposal received one of three Gold medals awarded by the International Academy of Architecture (IAA) at the recent UN Habitat Conference held in Istanbul, Turkey. Hundreds of architects and planners from more than 22 countries participated in the IAA competition and conference titled "Ecopolises: Settlements for Sustainable Development."
