COURSE OUTLINE AND SCHEDULE FOR SPRING SEMESTER

ARCH 352--Architectural Structures II

Continuation of ARCH 351: Timber and Steel Architectural Structures. Prerequisite: Certified major in Architecture or Construction Management; successful completion of ARCH 351.

Objectives

This course is the second semester in the four-semester architectural structures sequence. Emphasis will be on the following course objectives:
1.    Continued application of basic structural theory developed in ARCH 351.
2.    Analysis of simple statically-determinate architectural structures in timber and steel.

Course Content

1.    Timber design (continued from ARCH 351):
        a.    Timber beams
        b.    Timber columns
        c.    Timber connections
        d.    Use of the Western Woods Use Book and Software

2.    Steel structures (LRFD):
        a.    Steel as a structural material
        b.    Steel beam design
        c.    Steel column design
        d.    Steel connections
        e.    Corrosion & Fire protection
        f.     Case studies from forensic engineering

 

Course Requirements
Grading will be on the basis of weekly quizzes (2/3 of grade) and a final exam (1/3 of grade).  "Quality" of attendance will be rewarded.

Ambrose & Tripeny, Simplified Engineering for Architects and Builders, 10th Edition, Wiley, 2006.
Western Woods Use Book, Western Wood Products Association.
